Hopoo Games, known for creating the popular roguelike Risk Of Rain and its sequel Risk Of Rain 2, has recently announced that they will be closing down as a studio. The founders, Paul Morse and Duncan Drummond, along with other team members, will be joining Valve to work on game development. This decision comes after the cancellation of their unannounced game called “Snail”. The team expressed their gratitude towards their fans and team for their support over the past 12 years.
Indie Teams at Valve
The absorption of indie game developers by Valve is not a new concept. Campo Santo, the creators of Firewatch, also decided to abandon their next game to work at Valve. This move raises questions about Valve’s approach to game development and the impact on smaller studios. The dissolution of Hopoo Games coincides with the lukewarm reception to Risk of Rain 2’s recent DLC. Despite selling the rights to Gearbox in 2022, the former Hopoo Games team still shows empathy towards the current developers working on the franchise.
The Future of Hopoo Games’ Team at Valve
It remains unclear what projects the former Hopoo Games team will be working on at Valve. With Valve’s focus on titles like Deadlock, a multiplayer shooter, there is speculation about potential game ideas in development. Valve’s internal management structure is known for its unorthodox approach, which adds an element of mystery to the new positions held by Hopoo Games’ developers. Despite the secrecy surrounding Valve’s operations, insights from former employees shed some light on the company’s unique work culture.
The move of Hopoo Games’ team to Valve marks a significant shift in the indie game development landscape. As fans await news of potential projects from the talented developers, the decision raises questions about the future of indie studios collaborating with larger companies. The legacy of Hopoo Games will continue to live on through their past creations, while their new journey at Valve signifies a new chapter in their careers.
