Google Photos is rolling out a new feature called Collections that aims to streamline the way users organize and access their albums. This update is in anticipation of the upcoming Gemini-powered Ask Photos assistant, set to launch this summer.
Redesigned Search Tab
One notable change is the redesigned search tab, which now offers a list of suggested options like Screenshots, Selfies, and Menus, instead of the previous image tiles. This is intended to improve the overall user experience and make it easier to find specific content.
Organization Features
Collections house all of the user’s albums in one convenient location, including private albums, shared albums, and new folders for people, pets, documents, and places. Users can easily switch between different views such as “All,” “Shared with me,” and “My albums,” making it simpler to navigate through their content.
Google has made adjustments to the Collections view based on user feedback. For example, Locked Folders will no longer be suggested at the top of the view due to complaints about their placement. Additionally, the Utilities folder has been removed, but the tools under it have been relocated for easier access.
The new Collections view replaces the library tab with a bookshelf-style icon, providing a fresh and intuitive interface for users to interact with their albums. Users can now create Locked Folders and manage photo frames by tapping on their Google Photos account profile, simplifying the process.
The Collections feature is currently rolling out to all Android and iOS Google Photos users, although it may take a few weeks to reach all devices. This gradual rollout allows Google to address any potential issues and ensure a smooth transition for all users.
The introduction of Google Photos Collections represents a significant step towards improving the user experience and enhancing the organization of albums. With features like the redesigned search tab, convenient organization options, and user-friendly interface, Google Photos continues to innovate and provide users with a seamless photo management experience.
