Instagram has recently introduced a new feature called “limits,” aimed at providing users with more control over their interactions on the platform. This safety control allows users to hide direct messages and comments from accounts that may be harassing or causing unwanted interactions. Previously, Instagram users could only limit interactions from recent followers or accounts that don’t follow them. However, with the new limits feature, users can now mute incoming messages from everyone except those on their close friends list.
When implementing limits, users will only see direct messages, tags, and mentions from individuals on their close friends list. Accounts that are not on the close friends list can still interact with posts, but their updates will be hidden from the user. Additionally, these accounts will not be notified that their content has been hidden. Users also have the option to choose whether to view or ignore the limited comments and messages. Limits can be set for up to four weeks initially, with the option to extend the duration if needed.
To enable limits on Instagram, users can access the feature by tapping on their profile, selecting the hamburger menu in the top-right corner, and choosing “Limited interactions.” From there, users can toggle on limits for accounts that aren’t following them, recent followers, or everyone except close friends. In addition to the limits feature, Instagram has also expanded its restrict feature, allowing users to prevent others from tagging or mentioning them in posts.
These new safety measures come at a time when Instagram is facing increased scrutiny over the safety of its young users. Earlier this year, Meta, the company that owns Instagram, implemented a feature that prevents adults from messaging minors by default on Instagram and Facebook. Furthermore, the platform has taken steps to hide content related to suicide and eating disorders from teenage users. By introducing features like limits and expanding existing safety controls, Instagram is working towards creating a safer and more secure environment for all users.
