The idea of on-demand transit (ODT) as proposed by a group of researchers at Concordia is one that aims to revolutionize the traditional bus-based fixed routes. Instead of following predetermined schedules and routes, ODT utilizes an algorithm-based system where passenger vans replace buses. This system allows drivers to respond to rider requests made through smart devices at existing bus stops, picking up one or more passengers and delivering them to the nearest public transit hub.
According to co-lead author Seyed Mehdi Meshkani, ODT presents several advantages over the current bus-based services. From the passenger perspective, it offers improved flexibility, reduced wait times, and overall travel time optimization. By eliminating frequent stops, the ODT system is able to collect passengers efficiently and bring them to the public transit hub. Additionally, there are benefits for transit agencies as well, as ODT significantly reduces capital and operating costs while also decreasing overall greenhouse gas emissions.
The researchers used the town of Terrebonne, Quebec as a model for their system. Situated on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence River, Terrebonne is a moderately sized community with existing commuter rail and bus services. This made it an ideal location to showcase the potential of the ODT system without requiring physical prototypes. By implementing smart devices at existing bus stops linked to a dispatch algorithm, passengers can easily request a ride which the algorithm matches based on various criteria.
The ODT model uses passenger vans as vehicles, which are more fuel-efficient and require less maintenance and training compared to traditional city buses. This results in lower operating costs while maintaining service quality. The researchers found that the proposed ODT service could lead to a 36% reduction in total travel time and a 41% reduction in detour time compared to existing bus-based services.
Future Implications of On-Demand Transit
Unlike ride-share services like Uber or Lyft which implement dynamic pricing, the cost per trip with ODT remains fixed. This provides a predictable and cost-effective transportation option for commuters. As the world moves towards a more gig economy-style model, on-demand transit could be a feasible solution for improving public transit systems in suburban and exurban areas.
