SpaceX is gearing up for a momentous event in space exploration history with the upcoming Polaris Dawn mission. This mission, funded by billionaire and private astronaut Jared Isaacman, will see four astronauts journey through the Van Allen radiation belts aboard the Crew Dragon capsule. Among the crew are retired US Air Force fighter pilot Scott Poteet, as well as SpaceX engineers Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis. This mission marks a significant milestone in space exploration, with the astronauts traveling to a maximum altitude of around 870 miles above Earth.
The Polaris Dawn mission is not just about sending astronauts into space; it also serves several important objectives. One of the main highlights of the mission is the planned spacewalk, which will be the first one conducted by private astronauts. During the spacewalk, Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis will test SpaceX’s new extravehicular activity (EVA) spacesuits, which are designed for improved mobility and safety in space. These cutting-edge suits feature a 3D-printed helmet with a heads-up display and a visor to reduce glare, ensuring the astronauts’ safety during the mission.
In addition to the spacewalk, the Polaris Dawn crew will engage in a range of scientific research activities during their mission. One key area of study will be the effects of space radiation on the human body. As the Crew Dragon passes through the Van Allen radiation belts, the astronauts will contribute valuable data to research on space radiation and its impact on human health. Furthermore, the crew will also test Starlink’s satellite internet technology for communication with Earth, as well as research decompression sickness and Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome.
The Polaris Dawn mission is scheduled to launch on Tuesday, August 27th, with SpaceX aiming for a 3:38 AM ET liftoff time from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. In the event of a delay, two additional launch times have been set for 5:23 AM ET and 7:09 AM ET. Viewers can watch a live stream of the mission on SpaceX’s website and its dedicated X page, with coverage beginning at around 12:05 AM ET. The spacewalk, set to take place on the third day of the mission, will also be broadcast live, providing a unique opportunity for viewers to witness this historic event unfold in real-time.
The Polaris Dawn mission represents a significant step forward in private space exploration, with the crew set to embark on a groundbreaking journey through the Van Allen radiation belts and conduct important scientific research in space. With the planned spacewalk, testing of advanced spacesuits, and exploration of new technologies, this mission showcases the innovative spirit and dedication of those involved in pushing the boundaries of human spaceflight. As we eagerly await the launch of the Crew Dragon capsule, the world watches in anticipation of the next chapter in space exploration history.
