TikTok Lite, a version of the popular social media app designed for users in poorer markets, has come under scrutiny for its lack of safety features. While the full version of TikTok includes labels for AI-generated content, graphic material, and dangerous behavior, TikTok Lite fails to provide these guardrails for its users. This raises concerns about the spread of misinformation, particularly during elections, where AI-generated content can be deceptive.
According to a report from the Mozilla Foundation and AI Forensics, TikTok Lite not only leaves AI-generated content unlabeled but also lacks other essential safety features present in the full version of the app. This discrepancy means that users in poorer markets are being exposed to potentially harmful content without the necessary warnings that users in wealthier countries receive.
Mozilla fellow Odanga Madung questions why TikTok chose to omit safety features from the Lite version of their app. While companies often release lite versions to accommodate users with limited data access or older devices, the decision to compromise on safety features raises concerns about the company’s priorities. Whether this omission was intentional or negligent remains unclear.
In response to the report, a TikTok spokesperson defended the company’s approach to safety, stating that content violations are treated the same on both the full and Lite versions of the app. However, the spokesperson did not address the specific concerns raised in the report. This lack of transparency further calls into question TikTok’s commitment to user safety on all versions of their platform.
The practice of releasing lite versions of apps is not new, with companies like Facebook launching similar versions to reach users in developing markets. While these lite versions aim to make apps more accessible in regions with limited resources, they have often been criticized for providing a subpar user experience. TikTok Lite’s expansion into markets in Southeast Asia highlights the growing importance of catering to users with lower income and constrained resources.
