According to a recent study published in Energy Policy, emotions like concerns and worries about climate change play a significant role in shaping how people view and support various energy options. These emotions can spark enthusiasm for renewables such as hydro, solar, and wind, while creating opposition towards coal, oil, and gas.
Researchers have identified two key emotional factors that influence individual decisions related to energy sources: climate concern and climate worry. Climate concern refers to the general worries about the impacts of climate change on oneself, loved ones, and the environment. These emotions are powerful motivators for individuals to take personal action and support progressive climate policies. The study conducted a meta-analysis involving data from 36 countries and over 85,000 participants to understand how these emotions affect energy preferences.
The findings of the study revealed that individuals who express higher levels of concern and worry about climate change are more likely to support renewable energy sources like hydroelectricity, solar, and wind. This is due to the lower greenhouse gas emissions produced by renewables in comparison to fossil fuels. Surprisingly, the study did not find significant opposition to fossil fuels among individuals with climate concerns. Factors like political ideology, gender, and education had minimal impact on energy preferences, indicating the strong influence of climate-related emotions.
One interesting aspect highlighted in the study is that individuals with climate worries tend to support an “energy addition” strategy rather than an “energy transition” strategy. This means that they prefer adding renewable energy sources to the existing energy mix rather than a complete shift away from fossil fuels.
